This weekend, Jack Bobridge will kick off a slew of attempts to take the UCI Hour Record. Just three months ago, Mathias Brandle knocked off fan favorite Jens Voight, and one of the most hallowed titles in cycling found new life. Massive names like Bradley Wiggins, Fabian Cancellara, Tony Martin, and BMC's Rohan Dennis stepped up to challenge the record and make history.
To celebrate this iconic challenge, Einstein Cycles is sponsoring the Fat Bike Hour Record. On February 7, the day before Rohan Dennis' attempt in Switzerland, Cody Sovis will set the first official mark at the certified course at Timber Ridge. Riders will have exactly one month to set their own best times, with final attempts ending March 8, just a month removed from what we hope is the record set on the track by Rohan Dennis.
Ec will be hosting a viewing party to watch Dennis' attempt right here at the shop on February 8. Stop by, watch the attempt, have some coffee, then make plans for your own run at the Fat Bike Hour Record. We'll have prizes for men's, women's and Junior winners at the end of the open window of competition. The course is flat, fast and open for inspection at any time.
Sovis has a realistic view of his own chances of winning; "There are a lot of faster guys out there, but I think I can set a reasonably mark for them to target. I expect to see the record in the 20-25km range by the end of things in March."
There are some basic regulations in place:
All attempts must be on a fat bike, with tires 3.8" tires or wider.
All riders must wear a helmet.
All riders must contact Ec BEFORE the attempt.
All attempts must be posted on Strava, or have a GPX file available for review.
Riders cannot accept hand-ups of food or water from supporters. All water and food must be on the bike at the start.
All attempts must begin from a dead-start, not a rolling start.
All attempts must be in the same direction (counter-clockwise).
All attempts must be completely solo. No other riders can be on course at the same time, no pacing by any method.
We'll have updates on equipment, goals and the attempt itself all of next week, with Sovis' attempt slated for 10 o'clock on Saturday, February 7. Watch for a press conference in the next few days, before February 1's ControversiALE Fat Bike Race, also at Timber Ridge, at 10am.
