Cyclocross is a sport that some people do good, and some people don't do so good. Here are some tips to make sure that you are one of the 'do good' people I was talking about earlier in this blog post.
The first thing you have to remember is that cyclocross bike riding is like all the bike riding you already do, so don't be scared or nothing. You already ride bikes on the road, in the grass, in the sand, in the dirt, the only thing is now you are doing all of those things at the same time. Another thing is that you should run your tires lower pressure than normal so that you can do good on all the terrain.
One thing about cyclocross that is good is that you can't get lost. The whole course is taped on both sides, so as long as you don't duck under the tape, you will be okay. A pro tip that I have is to not worry too much about tape that says, "CAUTION" on it. I used to be scared that something dangerous like a bear or a wolf was gonna happen at the "CAUTION" parts but they haven't yet so you can just not think about it too much.
Another thing they make you do is jump over things in the course. You will want to get off your bike first, then hop over the stairs or the boards, then get back on. You want to do this quick though cause walking your bike is a lot slower than riding it. You might see some people stay on their bikes and just jump right over stuff. DON'T try that unless you speak German like all the real cyclocross race people from Belgium. If you don't know you can do it, don't do it in the race.
A last thing you should watch out for at cyclocross is people giving you stuff while you are riding. They will try to hand you dollar bills and Twinkies and sometimes they will have bacons. These are for fun but they might make you go slower. You will also see people holding up their phones, but don't try to take those, they are just taking your picture for MySpace. They will get mad if you try to take the phone from them.
Okay, you should be all set to cyclocross good now.
