We are teaming up with the Grand Traverse Resort and Timber Ridge on October 10 for another edition of the world's most enjoyable Iceman Cometh Pre-Ride around!
For the third year in a row, we'll be leading a guided ride of the Iceman Cometh course, with the help of the Grand Traverse Resort and Timber Ridge. Learn the course, chat with some experienced and talented locals, and enjoy a beautiful fall day in Northern Michigan during peak color season.
Last year, we had well over 100 people in several groups head out from the Park and Ride in Kalkaska to check out the course. The recon certainly paid off for some; logging roads, muddy lines and new sections of singletrack all changed the face of the race in 2014, combined with some of the worst conditions ever experienced at the Iceman...ever. It seems like there's just no way the weather can be as bad as that again, but a little preparation can't hurt!
Here's the game plan for our ride this year. For those Expert/Elite riders going for the full Out and Back, we'll leave promptly at 9am from Timber Ridge Resort. The full Out and Back is a big day in the saddle at over 40 miles and easily three hours in the saddle; only those who have done a sub 2.5 hour Iceman should attempt it. Timber Ridge will not be offering a shuttle option this year, so folks looking just to do the Back will need to sort out transportation to Kalkaska.
We'll roll from the Park and Ride at 10am, splitting into three groups. The first group will shoot for a 2:15 finish, with the second group sticking to 2:40, while the third group will look to finish around three hours. This year, we will not be able to support riders going too much longer than three hours. Last year, we had volunteers in the woods for six hours, which isn't fair to them. A 3 hour time goal equates to roughly 9mph average speed. Remember, it's not a race! Enjoy the ride, the company and the Pere Marquette Forest!
Einstein Racing will have a number of riders to lead the three groups, guiding you along the course and offering up some anecdotal fun along the way. Thank your volunteers for their time!
After the ride, enjoy drinks and specials at Aerie Lounge, located at the top of the beautiful Grand Traverse Resort. It is one unbelievable view in October, that's for sure!
