This bike already got some pub earlier this year, but it's back under the microscrope ahead of this weekend's Barry-Roubaix.
It's mostly untouched from winter, but some small changes have been made from its first iteration in February. It's still got that All-City soul; Reynolds 853 steel tubing, paired with a Whisky carbon fork, and the same classic cyclocross geometry AC has really nailed on their bikes over the past few years.
For Barry's relentless rolling hills, the 50-34 crankset matches well with a tight 11-26 rear cassette. The compact road gearing offers a nice range, with just that little more top end for the descents, pavement, and possibly even a sprint finish, even if that spring is just to stay in the top 100 overall.
The cockpit is a selection of hand-picked components, including a Ritchey Super Logic carbon post for a smooth ride, and an Easton EC70 stem. It's about 20mm shorter than the stock 110mm, but a combination of old age and a compact position on the bike mean my extension isn't what it was in my youth.
The big change comes in the wheels. The beautiful Reynolds Assaults have been tucked away for a customer, so out of the closet pop the trusty, stiff and tough Velocity Ailerons. After flatting at the Lowell 50, I've finally agreed to try tubeless for gravel. Because I like to run higher pressures, it never made a ton of sense to go to tubeless. However, after some light testing with the setup a week ago, the Schwalbe G-One tires I've been using (35 width, if you're wondering) are rated highly for tubeless, and Velocity's rims work extremely well. There's a touch of sentimentality, too; Velocity is based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, a hop, skip, and double-jump from Hastings, Michigan, the home of Barry-Roubaix. These Ailerons are also the wheels I won Cherry-Roubaix on, and I've never really been able to let them go after.
